seven kids at oakville waterfront photo session

Documenting Family Changes Through the Years

I’ve been working with the Fullarton family for nine years. Like all families there have been changes over the years; a new grandson came along after the first couple of sessions and sadly Grandpa Derek died a few years ago.  Some years, we’ve had all three generations of the family together, and some years it’s been just the grandchildren.

What to Wear

Nana Claudia always oversees the coordination of outfits.  The first year was the (popular back then) white shirts and jeans, but then we moved on to the coordinated (rather than matching) wardrobe concept.  Everyone always looks fantastic – and who could resist the Christmas sweater shot?  (These were a limited appearance, we got some “regular” outfits in the same session.)

Claudia and I have worked together to vary the locations of most sessions, although her lovely home and garden have been our base more than once.  We’ve made a tour of park locations around Oakville.

Keeping it fresh

I’ve also endeavoured to make sure the images are different each time.  Each session includes all the grandchildren together, the sibling groups and each child individually.  But I know some of Claudia’s favourites are the candid shots captured in between the organised ones.  This was especially true of the Fall 2022 session when an extra lovely day and great location at the Oakville waterfront gave us lots of playtime enjoyed by all the kids.  I always get a kick out of seeing teenagers playing like little kids on playground equipment.

How to Display your Photos

One thing that has remained constant with every session.  In addition to prints to update her frames, Claudia always orders four identical 11″x13″ coffee table books – one for her and one for each of her sons’ families.  The most recent edition with full colour, full bleed photo cover gets displayed on an easel on the piano in her living room.
